PCI Express devices communicate via a logical connection called an interconnect or link.A link is a point-to-point communication channel between two PCI Express ports allowing both of them to send and receive ordinary PCI requests (configuration, I/O or memory read/write) and interrupts (INTx, MSI or MSI-X). 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4). The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with all PCI Express x1 slots. All PCI Express x1 slots will become unavailable when a PCIe x4 expansion card is installed. The way around this is to put your graphics card in the PCIEX16 slot. This will then leave the PCIE x1 slots working for the network card. Given, a 1x slot will only deliver a portion of what NVMe has to offer, it does at least give you another option for that 1x slot. They are available in PCIe 1x options, providing one or two M.2 slots. A PCIe x1 slot has one lane and can move data at one bit per cycle. Take a look at this picture of a PCI-Express x1 slot (at the end of a flexibleextender) that was cut out to allow down-plugging a PCIe x16 card into it.
I noticed that when people use a Dremel to cut the plastic, they tend tointuitively place the cutting disk along the longitudital axis, often damagingthe pins in the slot because of the thickness of the cutting disk.

Instead it is easier to place the cutting disk along the lateral axis. Thisremoves more plastic material, but does not necessitate a really precise cutwith a thin disk and steady hand :-)
